History

The area now occupied by the town of Sherman was first settled in 1832 by Alfred Cushman. Before its incorporation as a town in 1862, the area was known as "Molunkus Mill" and "Golden Ridge Plantation." The town's name was derived from Senator John Sherman of Ohio.

The earliest settlers of the town migrated from the coastal areas of Maine as the shipbuilding industry declined, the first buildings constructed mostly of rough-hewn timber and wooden pegs, while some early structures utilized granite, which was transported to Sherman by oxen from Island Falls over primitive roads and paths.

Most early settlers were involved in the lumber industry, while nearby rivers transported products to market, and farming was undertaken on small scale until the railroad was extended through the town in 1893, greatly expanding the town's potato economy.

Early town meetings were held in rural schoolhouses until the construction of the first town hall in 1863, when town meetings were accompanied by a dinner.
