History
Oakfield is a town in Aroostook County, formally organized as a plantation from the township T5R3 WELS on February 21, 1878 and its organization was reconfirmed in 1895.
Originally settled in 1831, and organized for the assessment of taxes in 1866, the town itself was incorporated on February 24, 1897.
Geography
Oakfield is located just south of Smyrna, east of Dyer Brook. The main village, on the East Branch of the Mattawamkeag River, is located near the junction of U.S. Route 2, Interstate 95, and the railroad.
There are several ponds and lakes, particularly in the northern part of Oakfield Township, including a small western portion of Drew's Lake, a 1,057 acre body of water, also known as Meduxnekeag Lake, Spaulding Lake, in the north-central part of the township, Long Lake, to the west of the latter, Timoney Lake, Carson Pond, and Clark Pond. Timoney Mountain can be found in the northeastern part of the township.
The southern, less populated portion of the township, is mountainous, containing Sam Drew Mountain and Oakfield Hills, which takes up most of the lower part.

Museums
Oakfield Railroad Museum
Located at 40 Station Street, the Oakfield Railroad Museum is dedicated to the early days of railroad transportation, the museum includes the wood-frame station building, hundreds of photographs, vintage signs and advertising pieces, signal lanterns, original railroad maps, telegraph equipment, newspapers, a hand car and a motor car, restored mail carts, the C-66 caboose, and a weathervane that came from the top of the old water tower that was demolished in 1982.

Knowles Corner ATV Club
The Knowles Corner ATV Club was established in 1996. At present it has over 100 members. Regular club meetings are held the second Sunday of each month at the "Smoki Haulers" Snowmobile Clubhouse on ITS-83 in Oakfield, Maine.

Smoki Haulers Snowmobile Club
Clubhouse located on ITS-83 in Oakfield, Maine. The Smoki Haulers have two trail groomers running day & night. They maintain 120 miles of club trails that connect out to ITS #85, #86 and #114.
