Mount Chase is a town in Penobscot County, incorporated on March 21, 1864. It was reorganized as a plantation on April 6, 1936, then reincorporated at a town in 1979. Home to Shin Pond and Upper Shin Pond, the plantation is served by ME-159, also known as the Shin Pond Road, traveling northwest from Patten.

Geography

Mount Chase Township is bordered on the east by Hersey Township, on the south by Patten Township, and on the west and north, respectively, by the unorganized territories of T5R7 WELS and T6R6 WELS. The most prominent geographic places within the township include Mount Chase, for which the township is named, and the Shin Ponds, parts of which are in the unorganized territories.

Shin Pond Village, located on the eastern border of Mount Chase Township, between Upper and Lower Shin Ponds, the village sits partially within the unorganized territory of T5R7 WELS.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 248 people, 104 households, and 76 families residing in the town. Its population today is roughly what it was in 1860.

Education

Mount Chase is a member of MSAD 25, comprising Mount Chase, Patten, Sherman, and Stacyville. There are no schools located in Mount Chase itself.
