Millinocket

From Katahdin

Jump to: navigation, search
Millinocket derived its name from the Abenaki language, meaning "many islands," the name given by the Abenakis to Millinocket Lake as well as the stream that leads from it, through the current town of Millinocket, and into the West Branch of the Penobscot River.

History

Geography

Millinocket Cemetery
Although it doesn't claim that distinction, Millinocket is located near the geographical center of Maine, about eighty-five miles up the Penobscot River from Bangor, at the end of a chain of lakes stretching across half the width of Maine, from Seboomook, near the Quebec border, to Pemadumcook Lake and Twin Lakes, south of Mount Katahdin and Baxter State Park.

By road, Millinocket can be reached by driving north of Bangor on I-95 about sixty miles, to Exit 244, the ME-157 exit, west, through Medway and East Millinocket, crossing Dolby Pond, to Millinocket, a distance of about twelve miles from the Interstate. Alternately, you can reach Millinocket via ME-11, approximately thirty miles northeast of Brownville, Maine. If you choose the latter route, watch for frost bumps in the spring, and always watch for moose, as there won't be much else between Brownville and Millinocket.

Millinocket is surrounded by Dolby Pond, to the east; Millinocket, Ambejejus and Pemadumcook Lakes, to the north and northwest; and Ferguson and Quakish Lakes, to the southwest. Millinocket Stream passes through the town, on its way to the West Branch of the Penobscot River. Water levels, and even the direction of flow, are entirely controlled by the Millinocket mill and the hydroelectric dams.

Utilities

Brookfield Power

A Canadian company, Brookfield Power is one of the lowest cost producers of hydroelectric power in North America. However, while they generate electricity in the Katahdin region, they do not provide electricity to that area. In Maine, Brookfield Power purchases much of its electricity through Great Lakes Hydro, which owns 26 hydroelectric generating stations with 86 generating units on 8 river systems in 4 North American geographic regions, including the Penobscot River, while Millinocket residents pay large transfer costs to purchase their electricity from Bangor Hydro.
