History

Geography

The primary road leading through Merrill, Maine, is ME-212, the town being just northwest of Smyrna Mills, at the area where Clark Road and Daisy Road meet ME-212. Sholler Mountain is in the northwest part of the township, and there are several small bodies of water, including the following:

Public places

Merrill Millstream Park

In 1997, the town acquired a piece of land between the East Branch of the Mattawamkeag River and ME-212, to be used for a park. The land was cleared by volunteers from the community, and is maintained with the help of the Boy Scouts and others, who rake, pick rocks, clear brush, and plant flowers.

Sholler Mountain

With an elevation of 1,385 ft, Sholler Mountain is located in the northwestern part of Merrill Township, west of ME-212.

Government

Merrill is governed by a Selectmen/Town Meeting/Manager system of government.

The town office that serves both Merrill and Smyrna is a single-story, wood frame structure, built in 1997, and located within walking distance of the village area, and is subdivided to house the post office. is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with extended hours until 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

As of the 2000 census, there were 249 people, 103 households, and 73 families residing in 141 housing units in Merrill, Maine.

Education

There are no schools located in Merrill, Maine. The town is a part of CSD #109, which includes the towns of Crystal, Dyer Brook, Island Falls, Merrill, Oakfield and Smyrna. Merrill students are bused to Southern Aroostook Community School, in Dyer Brook, Maine.

Water/Sewer

Smyrna-Merrill has never had municipal water or sewer, and has no plans to develop this infrastructure. There is, however, a sand and gravel aquifer segment in the village area adjacent to the west bank of the East Branch of the Mattawamkeag River, and another located in the Cold Brook area between ME-212 and the Rebel Hill Road. All subsurface waste disposal systems are privately owned.
