In the Abenaki, "East Millinocket" means "east of many islands, as it is east of the area called "Millinocket."

History

Geography

East Millinocket is approximately eight miles southeast of Millinocket, and just over two miles northwest of Medway, on ME-157, in Penobscot County, Maine. The town lies on the northern side of the West Branch of the Penobscot River, about sixty miles north of Bangor.

The West Branch of the Penobscot River forms the southern boundary of East Millinocket, the East Branch its eastern boundary, and Dolby Pond its western border. To its north is Grindstone Township. The settled town is in the southern portion, along the West Branch, for the most part.

Public places

Veterans Memorial Park

The East Millinocket Veternas Memorial Park is a work in progress, which its organizers hope to complete in time for the town's 100 year celebration in July of 2007. The intentions are to include, at this memorial site, three monuments (8" thick, 4' wide, 8' high), to accomodate the names of two hundred veterans per tablet, which will be black with white inscriptions.

Municipal pool

The municipal pool, located at the recreation complex on North Street, is open from the end of June through the end of August each year.

Municipal playground

Located behind the municipal pool, the playground is supervised, beginning in June, Monday through Friday, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:45 p.m., and on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:20 a.m.

Education

Schenck High School
East Millinocket is a part of School Union 113, made up of the towns of East Millinocket, Medway and Woodville. Students attend school at either Opal Myrick School, Medway Middle School or Schenck High School. The Opal Myrick and Schenck schools are located in East Millinocket while Medway Middle School is located in Medway, near the East Millinocket line.

Schools

Opal Myrick School

The Opal Myrick School was constructed in 1926 and 1927, and was originally the Garrett Schenck Junior High School. The school is now an elementary school, educating students from kindergarten through the fourth grade.

Schenck High School

Schenck High School was built in 1957, with an addition added to it in 1966. The school serves students from 9th through the 12th grade.

Katahdin Region Higher Education Center

The Katahdin Region Higher Education Center is the result of a cooperative effort of Eastern Maine Community College and the University of Maine System, offering courses for certificate, associate, bachelor, and master programs, as well as customized training for businesses.
