History

The first known settler in the area that was to become Dyer Brook was in 1844, when Orrin Laughton came from Smyrna, and built a log home. Dyer Brook was named for the stream that flows through it, and into the Mattawamkeag River.

Dyer Brook was organized as a plantaation for election purposes on September 6, 1858, and at the time of the 1880 census, the plantation had forty registered voters. After several additional organizations, it was incorporated as a town on March 21, 1891.

At one time, Dyer Brook once prospered, at the heart of Maine's potato country, but under economic pressure from the more northern Aroostook County towns, Dyer Brook lost eighteen percent of its population between the years 1990 and 2000.
