Description and location
Chairback Mountain is an open peak (2,660 feet) at the eastern end of the Barren-Chairback range of mountains. It is a one-day hike from a logging road south of the West Branch of the Pleasant River, in the northeastern segment of the unorganized territory of T7R9 NWP.
Access
From Katahdin Iron Works, follow a gravel paper company road for about three miles, then take the left fork at the Little Lyford Pond Camps (LLPC) sign.
The right fork leads to Gulf Hagas Mountain.
If you are driving, at this point, park your car at 6.7 miles from the Iron Works, just short of where the Appalachian Trail crosses the road. On foot, descend 0.2 miles to the Appalachian Trail, following it south as it climbs a short way on a tote road, then turns sharply to the left.
At 1.7 miles, the Appalachian Trail reaches the top of a ridge, and a side trail leads to the right 0.2 miles to East Chairback Pond. Continue over a series of ridges, the last half mile rising over a very steep talus slope to reach the summit of Chairback Mountain.
Distance
- To Chairback summit, 4.1 miles.
