Abbot is a town in Piscataquis County, Maine, named for the treasurer of Bowdoin College, John Abbot.

History

Geographical

The town of Abbot lies 76 miles north by east from Augusta, 130 north by east from Portland, and about 40 north-northeast from Norridgewock. It is bounded on the north by Monson, on the east by Guilford, and to the south by Parkman. The Piscataquis river passes nearly through the center of town. Abbot Village is intersected by ME-15/6 and ME-16, and Upper Abbot is north of Abbot Village, along ME-15/6.

The largest body of water in Abbot Township is Piper Pond, in the northwest corner of the township. Much smaller, Greenleaf Pond, is in the eastern part of the township, just north of its vertical center.

Cole Corner is located just east of the border between Abbot Township and Kingsbury Township, to the west.

Monson Junction is located north of Abbot Village and Upper Abbot, to the east of ME-6/15, but within Abbot Township.

Moosehorn

Moosehorn is located north of Monson Junction, and just south of the border of Abbot Township and Monson Township, to the north.

Upper Abbot

Upper Abbot is located between Abbot Village and Monson Junction, along ME-6/15.

Demographics

As of the 2000 census, there were 630 people, 272 households, and 196 families residing in 461 housing units in Abbot, Maine.

Education

Abbot is a member of MSAD #4, which includes the towns of Abbot, Cambridge, Guilford, Parkman, Sangerville, and Wellington. There are currently no schools in Abbot itself.
